LONDON — A Chinese herbal medicine used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) is being sold on the internet in the US.
The herbal remedy is sold on e-commerce websites in the US, Europe and Japan.
It is marketed as “herbal Viagra”.
The drug was first developed by the Chinese firm Wu Dang and is believed to have an effect on the heart.
Liu Hongyu, a professor of clinical medicine at the University of Chicago School of Medicine, said: “This is the first case of an FDA-approved product for the treatment of ED.
"This is not a new finding, but we think it’s important to see a similar drug for treating erectile dysfunction and that’s the reason it’s available to many men."
Liu Hongyu and his co-founder, Dr Cheng Huang, were both researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, which is investigating the use of the drug to treat ED.
The drug was tested in laboratory mice and rabbits and has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of ED.
The drug is sold under the brand name Viagra.
